How to do the drill

  1. 1

Put the ball 10 steps (20 feet) from goal. Set a chair 3 steps (6 feet) in front.

  2. 2

Plant your left foot beside the ball, coming in at an angle.

  3. 3

Hit the ball's right side with the inside of your right foot. Aim just right of the chair.

  4. 4

Take 10 with your right foot, then 10 with your left from the other side.

  5. 5

Count the shots that bend around the chair and go in. Log your total out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Hit the side of the ball.
  • Toes up, ankle locked.
  • Swing across your body.

What good looks like

The ball starts outside the chair, then bends back and goes in.

Safety

Shoot at a goal or into open space with nobody behind the target, away from windows, cars and the street. Warm up with a few easy passes before you shoot.

Why this drill

A curved shot can bend around a defender or away from a goalkeeper's reach. The same touch helps you bend passes and crosses into space.
