How to use these soccer shooting drills
Shooting problems these drills fix
- Kicking with the toe.
- Shots that fly over the goal.
- Weak shots with no power.
- Only shooting with the strong foot.
Each drill has a short video clip, numbered steps and one result to count, like shots on target out of 20.
Where to start
- Young players start with how to kick a soccer ball.
- Then learn the laces shot for power and the penalty kick for placement.
- Add the curve shot, chip shot and volley once the laces shot is solid.
What you need
- A backyard goal or a fence or wall with a taped target, plus a few balls so you shoot more and chase less.
- A chair, cone or trash can works as a defender to bend and chip around.
Soccer shooting drills FAQ
How do you kick a soccer ball hard?
Plant your standing foot beside the ball, point your toe down, lock your ankle and strike the middle of the ball with your laces, landing on your kicking foot. See the laces shot.
How do you curve a soccer ball?
Strike the ball off-center with the inside of your foot and wrap your foot around it, following through across your body. See the curve shot.
Where should you aim a penalty kick?
Low and near a post. Pick your corner before you run up and don't change your mind. The penalty kick drill uses targets in both bottom corners.
