Soccer shooting drill

Volleys

A volley in soccer is a shot taken before the ball touches the ground. This drill uses self-tosses to practice keeping the volley down and on target.

Dose
20 volleys (10 with each foot), 2–3 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • Goal, rebounder or a brick or concrete wall (with a parent's OK)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand 6 steps (12 feet) from the goal or wall, holding the ball at your waist.

  2. 2

Drop the ball in front of your right foot.

  3. 3

Kick it with your laces before it lands. Keep your toes pointed and your knee over the ball.

  4. 4

Do 10 with your right foot, then 10 with your left.

  5. 5

Count every volley that hits the goal or the wall below your head. Your total out of 20 is the number you log.

Coaching cues

  • Eyes on the ball.
  • Toes down, ankle locked.
  • Knee over the ball.

What good looks like

The ball comes off your laces low and straight at the target.

Safety

Volley at a goal or rebounder when you can. Use a wall only if a parent says it's OK, pick brick or concrete, and stay away from windows, garage doors and the street.

Why this drill

Volleys let you shoot or clear a ball out of the air without waiting for it to land. Dropping it yourself gives you lots of clean tries at the timing.
