How to do the drill
- 1
Set the ball 8 steps (16 feet) from goal. Put a cone 1 step inside each post.
- 2
Start 3 steps back and a bit to the side. Run in at an angle.
- 3
Plant your left foot beside the ball, knee over it, toes at the corner.
- 4
Toes down, ankle locked, strike the ball's middle with your laces. Land on that foot.
- 5
Shoot 10 per foot. Count low shots between a cone and the post. Log your total out of 20.
Coaching cues
- Knee over the ball.
- Toes down, ankle locked.
- Land on your shooting foot.
What good looks like
The ball stays low and hard and goes into the corner, and you land on your shooting foot after it.
Safety
Nobody stands in the goal or behind it while you shoot. At a wall, get a parent's okay, draw two low corner boxes with chalk, and stay away from windows, parked cars and the street.
Why this drill
A laces shot is the hardest, most direct shot in soccer. Keeping your knee over the ball keeps it low, and aiming for the corners puts it where goalkeepers struggle to reach.
