Ages

Time
12 minutes
Dose
20 chips (10 with each foot), 2–3 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+); 3 or more saves chasing
  • Goal, or two cones 4 steps (8 feet) apart as a goal
  • Chair or tall cone to chip over

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set the ball 8 steps (16 feet) from the goal. Put a chair 2 steps (4 feet) in front of it.

  2. 2

Plant your left foot right next to the ball and lean back a little.

  3. 3

Stab under the ball with your right toes and stop your leg short.

  4. 4

Do 10 with your right foot, then 10 with your left.

  5. 5

Count every chip that clears the chair and lands in the goal. Log your total out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Get under the ball.
  • Short, sharp kick.
  • Lean back a little.

What good looks like

The ball pops up over the chair and drops softly into the goal.

Safety

Chip on grass or turf so the ball sits up and your toes don't jam into hard ground. Keep the area behind the goal clear of people, windows and the street.

Why this drill

A chip lifts the ball over a goalkeeper who comes out, or over a defender's legs. It teaches you to control how high and how far the ball goes.
