Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12)
  • A small goal, or a brick or concrete wall
  • Chalk, tape or 2 cones to mark a target

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Put the ball 5 steps (10 feet) from a wall or small goal. Mark a target.

  2. 2

Take 2 or 3 steps to the ball. Put your left foot next to it, toes pointing at the target.

  3. 3

Point your right toes down and kick the middle of the ball with your shoelaces.

  4. 4

Keep swinging your leg toward the target after the kick.

  5. 5

Kick 10 with each foot. Count every kick that hits the target. Log your total out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Foot next to the ball.
  • Toes down.
  • Kick through the ball.

What good looks like

The ball goes straight at the target and your kicking leg keeps swinging after it.

Safety

Kick at a goal, or at a brick or concrete wall only if a parent says it's okay, away from windows, parked cars and the street. Wear sneakers or soccer shoes, not bare feet.

Why this drill

Kicking with the shoelaces is stronger and straighter than a toe poke, and it's the start of every good shot. Learning it early with both feet makes shooting easier later.
