Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
10–18
Time
15 minutes
Dose
10 long passes with each foot (20 total), 2–3 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+); 2–5 balls means less chasing
  • 4 cones or markers
  • An open field or park

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Set 4 cones in a square 5 steps (10 feet) wide. Put the ball 15 steps (30 feet) away.

  2. 2

Take 3 steps back and a little to the side. Run in at an angle.

  3. 3

Plant your left foot beside the ball. Lean back a bit and strike under its middle with your laces.

  4. 4

Do 10, then switch feet and do 10 more.

  5. 5

Count every ball that lands in the square in the air. Log your total out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Come in at an angle.
  • Hit under the middle.
  • Follow through high.

What good looks like

The ball rises, flies straight and drops into the square without bouncing first.

Safety

Use an open field with nobody in the way, well away from windows, cars and the street. Warm up with short passes first, and stop if your kicking leg or hip hurts.

Why this drill

A long pass switches play to open space or finds a teammate running behind the defense. Aiming at a zone turns random big kicks into passes a teammate could actually control.
