Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
6–18
Time
8 minutes
Dose
10 standing throw-ins and 10 with a step (20 total), 2–4 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • A brick or concrete wall
  • Chalk or painter's tape to mark a target

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Mark a chest-high target on the wall. Face it from 5 steps (10 feet) away.

  2. 2

Hold the ball in both hands, fingers spread, thumbs almost touching behind it.

  3. 3

Take it all the way behind your head and throw it over your head with both hands.

  4. 4

Keep both feet down until the ball leaves your hands. Do 10 standing, then 10 with a step in.

  5. 5

Count throws that hit the target with both feet down. Log your total out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Behind your head.
  • Both feet down.
  • Two hands, same push.

What good looks like

The ball starts behind your head, both hands push it evenly, and your toes stay on the ground the whole time.

Safety

Only use a house wall if a parent says it's okay. Pick a brick or concrete wall away from windows, parked cars and the street, and let the ball bounce before you catch it.

Why this drill

A foul throw hands the ball to the other team. A clean, strong throw-in keeps possession and gets the ball to a teammate who is ready to play it.
