Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
8–18
Time
10 minutes
Dose
20 turns (10 each way), 3 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • Solid wall (brick or concrete) or a rebounder
  • 1 cone or marker (a shoe works)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Stand 5 steps (about 10 feet) from the wall. Set a cone 5 steps behind you.

  2. 2

Pass to the wall, then turn sideways so you can see the wall and the cone.

  3. 3

Let the ball roll across you and touch it toward the cone with your back foot.

  4. 4

Dribble to the cone and come back. Do 10 turning left and 10 turning right.

  5. 5

Count each turn you make in one touch. Log your total out of 20.

Coaching cues

  • Open your hips.
  • Look over your shoulder.
  • Back foot takes it.

What good looks like

Your first touch moves the ball past your body toward the cone, and you are off running with it.

Safety

Use a brick or concrete wall or a rebounder, only with a parent's OK, away from windows and the street. Keep the cone path clear.

Why this drill

Turning with your first touch saves a touch and gets you facing the goal before a defender can close in.
