The video uses a coach throwing the ball and may show chest or head control. Toss the ball up to yourself instead, and use only your feet and thighs (chest only if you are 11 or older).

Who
Solo, no partner needed
Ages
7–18
Time
10 minutes
Dose
30 tosses (10 each foot, 10 on the thigh), 3–5 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • Open, flat space (yard, park or driveway)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Toss the ball up in front of you, a little higher than your head.

  2. 2

Lift your right foot to meet it and pull it down as it lands, so the ball drops dead.

  3. 3

Do 10 with your right foot and 10 with your left.

  4. 4

Do 10 on your thigh, then drop the ball to your feet.

  5. 5

Count each ball that ends up within a step of you. Log your total out of 30.

Coaching cues

  • Eyes on the ball.
  • Give with it.
  • Soft landing.

What good looks like

The ball lands on your foot or thigh and drops right in front of you without bouncing away.

Safety

Practice in open space away from windows and the street. No heading. Chest control is only for players 11 and older, with a soft toss.

Why this drill

Balls come at you in the air all game. Cushioning them with your foot and thigh lets you keep the ball instead of chasing it.
