About 10 minutes: bounce juggling, then 10 tries for your best streak, 4–6 days a week
Equipment
  • Soccer ball (size 3 through age 8, size 4 for ages 9–12, size 5 for 13+)
  • Open, flat space (yard, park or driveway)

How to do the drill

  1. 1

Hold the ball at your waist, drop it and let it bounce once.

  2. 2

Kick it gently straight up with your laces, ankle locked, and catch it.

  3. 3

Now go bounce, kick, bounce, kick without catching. Switch feet.

  4. 4

When that is easy, try two kicks in a row before a bounce.

  5. 5

Count kicks in a row before you lose it. Do 10 tries and log your best streak.

Coaching cues

  • Lock your ankle.
  • Small, soft kicks.
  • Ball to chest height.

What good looks like

The ball goes straight up to about chest height, so you barely have to move to reach it.

Safety

Juggle in open space away from windows, cars and the street. Use feet and thighs only; no heading.

Why this drill

Juggling teaches you to control the ball with a soft touch, which makes your first touch in games cleaner. Letting it bounce gives you time to set your foot, so beginners can make progress fast.
